fuck them all

Saturday, March 12th, 2005

mylene farmer is finally back and the first single of the new album is called “fuck them all”. i was sceptical at first because the title of the song does not sound like mylene. maybe she has changed her style but my fears were unjustified: mylene is still mylene and the musicvideo is downright awesome. actually, it blew my mental socks off! they play it all the time on MCM and it contains so many elements of her unique universe. the symbols and metaphers are overwhelming and you have to watch it again and again to get “it”. it’s to “early” for a complete analysis so i decided to put up some screenshots…

mylene in a cage
the black bird, a recurring symbol in mylene farmer's world
mylene destroying the scarecrows
reflection in a scattered mirror and again a black bird
closeup of mylene farmer
at the end mylene dissolves into particles

le cyclisme et le dopage

yesterday was a kind of busy day because i had to run some errands in town. so i really meant to blog about this newsitem that caught my attention yesterday but i did not get around doing so for various reasons…

it’s about the upcoming Tour de France (TdF), the one and only sports event pursue fanatically each year. well, tv5 had this newsitem yesterday titled “Cyclisme : l´enquête est ouverte concernant Lance Armstrong”. the french media seems to be sort of preoccupied with investigations about alleged doping accussations of Lance. it is - after all - “their” TdF and along comes an american who wins the competition six times in a row and sets a new record. what i want to say is that they have every right to be suspicious of him. what bothers me however is the way it is done. i feel it is almost a witchhunt; they are so sure that he has to be using some banned substances and as a result they are looking for some kind of proof. i am not qualified to make any statements about that assumption but i think the anti-doping controlls are pretty thourough in cycling and especially at the TdF. if he were using something illegal to enhance his performance they should have discovered it by now. instead they are basing their investigations on statements published in a book called “L.A. Confidentiel : Les secrets de Lance Armstrong” and on some remarks of a former masseur of him. after all i guess it’s just perfect timing since Lance has announced that he will compete in the TdF 2005 a week ago…

french-canadian movies

Monday, December 13th, 2004

yet another monday and i am stuck here with Minority Report. i do not want to watch that movie ever again! speaking of movies, there’s another french-canadian film on tv5 today called “Québec-Montréal” and from la bande annonce i can tell that it is sort of a road movie. i am curious how this one is going to be, because the last french-canadian movie i saw (”La Femme Qui Boit“) was rather strange…

sommet de la francophonie

sommet de la francophonie sur tv5.org

this summit really managed to get my attention because it appears to be unique and we do not have an equivalent to “la francophonie” in the german-speaking countries and regions. as a result i find it quite intriguing. well, we do have the EU, but this can’t be compared to la francophonie where the language (and the associated culture) appears to be the common basis for the community. i was also surprised that french is the official language in so many countries in Africa… and even Greece and some other central/east european countries expressed their interest in la francophonie… this is really astonishing.

profitez de la vie

Thursday, November 11th, 2004

something i wanted to post for a while now but never got around doing it: the french health service is promoting free flu shots for people older than 65 as a preventive measure and they produced two television commercials that i find quite amusing. “profitez de la vie, évitez la grippe”, is their slogan and you should really check out the two available commercials. it is interesting how serious medical issues can be presented in a catchy (ok, maybe trivial) and even entertaining way. i bet people remember those commercials easily once they have seen them… however, i have never seen a commercial for flu shots on German or Austrian television… i think cultural differences like that are intriguing, especially since the culture in question is right here in continental Europe…

halloween in europe

Friday, October 29th, 2004

what is the sudden hype with Halloween here in good ol’ Europe? don’t get me wrong, i have nothing against Halloween, it surely is a great festivity and an American tradition. so here is what bothers me: why do we have to celebrate it as well? the media is full of it: a weekend with special Halloween-style movies and shows… and this phenomenon is not restricted to Germany or Austria only… but also in France! i can hardly believe it! France! for example, most European countries that adopted it, the sub-unit of the Euro is called the Cent. France is the exception, as it gained permission to continue to use the existing term “Centime”. they even have an institution (”académie française“) that decides what foreign (e.g. english) terms and expressions are “imported” to french, but with the overall aim to keep the language “pure”.

welcome to the wonderful world of globalization. or as Rammstein put it in their new song “Amerika”:

Musik kommt aus dem Weißen Haus,
Und vor Paris steht Mickey Maus.

the french factor

Monday, October 18th, 2004

as i was reviewing the chapter on the key principles of Lacanian psychoanalysis today i had a revelation! i suddenly realized why i am learning French. it is not to understand Lacan better but to fill my lack. it was the same with the English language: i decided to study American and English literature because English gave me the feeling to be more complete, to be able to express myself better and to get a better understanding. but somehow this feeling subsided and was replaced by French a few months ago. this is what Lacan calls “objet a”, the cause of desire. it is impossible to have the “objet a”; it is dynamic, moving from one real object or thing to another, always in search for even greater desire (and jouissance). desire per se can never be satisfied - it keeps us (and our life) going.

i do not know for certain what i actally see in French or the french culture. however, it has a certain “surplus-value”, something that makes it desireable for me. you could also say it has a certain “factor” that is appealing to me. the most obvious answer would be to say, “it is a beautiful language”. but there is more to it and this “more” cannot be attributed to a single aspect; it evades our language because it is located in the psychic register of the Real — the place of ultimate jouissance.

le journal sur tv5

Thursday, October 14th, 2004

i enjoy watching “le journal” (i.e. the news) on tv5 as i mentioned a few days ago. usually i do not like watching the news because the anchors are mostly middle-aged men or women. but tv5 is different — big time! *g*

le journal sur tv5 avec ronald guintrange

i do (not) want to…

Thursday, October 7th, 2004

i suddenly felt the overwhelming urge to blog instead of incorporating the (minor) corrections of my supervisor into my thesis. i don’t want to do that… right now. maybe later. i am tired. i want to watch the french news on TV5. i could listen to this guy named Ronald Guintrange for hours — although i do only understand a little what he actually talks about…
