vertigo

Wednesday, December 15th, 2004

well, this is hardly breaking news but U2 has released a single called “Vertigo” some time ago. i heard it several times the past few weeks and never thought like wow that song kicks ass. i think this song had to grow on me because yesterday i suddenly realized that it really rocks. (you can’t really tell that from the media and so-called critics who easily praise every new single that hits the market.) apart from that the music video struck me as different and thus interesting. i have to say that i haven’t been what you would call a “fan” of U2. i enjoy selected songs but i do not collect all their albums. yet. well, here are few screencaps from the video:

freudian slip

i am just rewriting the analysis of one of the last scenes of Minority Report where Lamar kills himself. here’s what i just wrote:

Anderton gegenüber wirkt er wie eine fürsorgliche Vaterfigur und man könnte sagen, dass Lamar für ihn die Funktion eines Ich-Ideals hat. Doch der Schein trügt: Lacan ist der üble Drahtzieher…

a short summary for my non-german speaking readers: i am talking about how Lamar is like a father-figure – or in psychoanalytical terms an Ego-Ideal – for Anderton, the protagonist of Minority Report played by Tom Cruise. this is a deception because in reality Lamar is a bad guy… and well, apparently not Lamar but Lacan has become a bad guy for me… lol

french-canadian movies

Monday, December 13th, 2004

yet another monday and i am stuck here with Minority Report. i do not want to watch that movie ever again! speaking of movies, there’s another french-canadian film on tv5 today called “Québec-Montréal” and from la bande annonce i can tell that it is sort of a road movie. i am curious how this one is going to be, because the last french-canadian movie i saw (”La Femme Qui Boit“) was rather strange…

…with a new season of The Osbournes. i just watched an episode from season 3 (”The English Patient”) and it was simply hilarious. while Ozzy is recovering from his quad motorbike accident, Sharon is having troubles with her chat show. the funniest thing by far is that Ozzy develops a new addiction: some sort of cake or pie called “eclairs”. i was almost rolling on the floor each time he said in his unique way: “would you mind going to the cakeshop for me?”

“i am a media scientist, not a shrink!”
i am just revising a scene of Solaris where i talk about “Verwerfung” (foreclosure) and well, i should make my point clearer. however, the question per se (”what do you mean by saying that?”) can be interpreted in a psychoanalytical way.

break the routine!

Tuesday, December 7th, 2004

guess who is back, back again? exactly, our television set returned from its trip to the repair shop today. well, to be honest i did not really miss it but it is good to know that it is back home.
as anticipated, i drove to Klagenfurt today to get the “annotated” (i.e. with lots of comments scribbled all over the text) third chapter from my supervisor. because i figured that this would be (hopefully) the last trip to Klagenfurt before christmas i decided to drop by the “Südpark“, which is the largest shopping mall in the region. i did not intend to do actually some xmas shopping, just get some everyday things like dental floss and enjoy the atmosphere there. shopping malls are scary places; i was overwhelmed by the crowds in the mall. makes me wonder why so many people have the time (and money!) to go to the mall… anyway, it was a nice change of pace. tomorrow i am going to continue revising my thesis.

c’est déjà pas mal

Sunday, December 5th, 2004

after i woke up today i didn’t know what day it is. at first i thought that it is monday but then i realized that it is sunday. this is due to the fact that it does not really make a difference to me — i (have to) work anyway. i really do not want to write another rant about why i hate my thesis now. i figure it is sort of a “natural” process after having worked on one single project for more than two years that you reach a point where you can’t stand it anymore. the only thing i can do now is dig deep and finish it asap. and this is exactly what i am going to do. well, i don’t like the whole xmas stuff anyway, so i rather spend my time revising and finishing my PhD thesis instead of spending loads of money on xmas presents. you guys are absolutely right, it would be an awful waste of work, time and energy if i quit now.

yet another blogging community

Saturday, December 4th, 2004

Microsoft jumped on the blog-train as well by launching their very own blogging community called MSN Spaces. it looks quite promising and way more sophisticated than blogger. if you refrained from getting your own blog so far because you were intimated by a confusing installation routine or complex customization procedures, you should give MSN Spaces a try. there are several reasons why blogging is actually good for you.
