it is a huge mystery how the brain actually works. been reading stuff on neurotransmitter and serogenetic pathways lately. we do not know for sure why people become depressed or how anti-depressants work. we have been guessing so far, a trial and error thing: let’s try that drug, see if it works. i guess the brain is one of the last big unsolved questions so far. we already know something about it functions, but a lot is still unknown… and i believe that is kind of wonderful because once that puzzle is solved, it is just a question of time until human brains will be replaced by computers. (or in the worst case szenario, a dystopic future like the one of Matrix becomes reality.)

…writing a PhD thesis is incredible fun. *NOT* just kidding. started to write the “theoretical” chapter today. you know, that is usually the part at the beginning where the basic concepts and theories are explained. a pain in the ass, but necessary for some obvious reasons. so my journey is going to take me from Freud to Lacan and Zizek and then to outer space. at least i have a clue where i am heading…

finally farcry

it is about time that my copy finally arrived. this game rocks, no doubt about that. but the sad thing is that my machine appears to be too slow to run the game with all settings at “very high”. however, i am considering upgrading my hardware this summer anyway. new mainboard and CPU only, because that is the main bottleneck right now… and i am not that busy playing Far Cry because top priority is getting the darn thesis done.

the part of my thesis dealing with outer space is under heavy construction. as a result, i’ve been watching the selected movies again. personally i like Red Planet best, but from the theoretical point of view Solaris is the most “yielding” one. i do not know what to do with Mission to Mars, yet. at least i am making some progress…
