it’s been a bad day…

Sunday, February 29th, 2004

another bout of insomnia and i still do not know its cause. the only thing i know that it sucks lying awake until 4am and feeling your heartbeat that strongly that it scares you.

succession

i cannot help myself but i need to devote yet another blog entry to Alias. season 3 kicks ass! it’s so different from season 1 and 2, but still easily recognizable as Alias. i would say that it has evolved. just watched the second episode of season 3 and i think i am getting into the big picture what is going on. spydaddy is using Trillian to chat with spymommy. and the best thing of all, mr. sark is back!

the telling

Tuesday, February 24th, 2004

whoa. finally i managed to complete watching the second season of Alias. i expected the show to end with a usual cliffhanger, but this one’s different. no cliffhanger, but so many open questions. the last few minutes of 2×22 - The Telling introduce us to a complete new world, which is - excuse my obvious premature judgement - at least as compelling as the old SD-6 vs. CIA world was. i just watched the first ten minutes of 3×01 - The Two, and well… i am suprised. it seems the creators and producers are intelligent enough to conjure up something different but still the same to keep the show riveting. what did they say? Garner signed for six season of Alias? well, then i can rest assured that some great episodes are about to come… this show keeps inventing itself over and over again and stays fresh and enjoyable by doing so.

orkut explained?

Friday, February 20th, 2004

orkut is really a weird place because it has this unique “community” feature that friendster lacked. they are a great way to find people with the same interests. and the range of topics is almost incredible… i was quite surprised to find a Zizek community! i guess that is in essence what orkut is about: finding people that share your interests and exchange ideas. one could argue that you can do that on the Internet as well, but it is not as simple as on orkut. i am not sure if orkut is just a fad or temporary hype or really the beginning of social networking on the web.

expect the unexpected?

Tuesday, February 17th, 2004

when you think you got your life back in order, something unexpected is going to happen. today the fifth and last season of Sex and the City started and i turned on the tv (a very rare event!) to watch it. bummer! somehow the part in the satellite receiver that decodes the audio is defective because i could see Carrie but i could not hear a damn word. so i guess it is up to me to get a new satellite receiver asap. it is just like Murphy’s law… every time you think you covered everything and things should go well, something unexpected happens. but that is life after all, i guess.

painting on the wall

Saturday, February 14th, 2004

Strong on your feet you were blinded
Building up a tower on shaking ground
Once in a world full of colors
Back to see just ruins there to be found
And now you’re falling, crawling
Digging in the broken remains
Of what had to be taken for strong
Slowly it’s been fading away
Come into the painting on the wall
So the joker smiles
Come into the painting on the wall
No more crying
Illusions let you in from the rain
Follow Mr. Hopkins, get insane

a lesson in media culture

Thursday, February 12th, 2004

for those of you who might think i am kind of delusional - rest asured! i am perfectly aware that characters on tv are not real, they are fiction and sometimes quite unrealistic. nevertheless, an essential part when watching a tv show you enjoy is to identify with the characters presented, to share (at least for the time of the program) their life. or shall we still believe that the poor audience is passive when watching tv and being manipulated by the bad media guys? i could write pages about the active process of watching tv, but i will not do so. figure out yourself, read Stuart Hall!

shooters and stuff

i was tempted to re-install and play Neocron again. but in the end logic was stronger and i refrained from doing so. i know from my past experience that this MMORPG frustrates me after playing one or two days. as a result i downloaded the Call of Duty 1.2 patch, but ended up playing a few rounds Wolfenstein Enemy Territory. speaking of my very last term paper, i made some progress, but not much since my headache is still not gone. i am afraid this paper is going to take longer to finish than anticipated. darn tension headache…

tension headache

Monday, February 9th, 2004

as i am trying to get that very last term paper done my all time favorite hat syndrome keeps haunting me. yes, again. i know that this is nothing else than a nasty tension headache. it started saturday morning when i woke up and continued to torture me throughout the weekend… from past experiences i know that it usually lasts a few days. so things can only get better…

space above and beyond

Saturday, February 7th, 2004

this sci-fi series from the mid-90s is one of the best ever! i like it because it is realistic (as far as science fiction goes) and is set in a probable future when mankind starts to build colonies in space. additionally, i believe it is philosophical and a little unsettling because there are rarely happy endings like in Star Trek or Babylon 5. what a pity they cancelled it after only one season!
We thought we were alone. We believed the universe was ours… until one night in 2063 on an Earth colony sixteen light years away, they struck. And now we are at war.
