i am reading Freud’s “Das Unbehagen in der Kultur” right now and well, i find it quite intriguing. he says that happiness is impossible. we cannot be happy because culture demands too much sacrifices of our drives – he even says that the universe lacks a no concept like happiness. or as Our Lady Peace put it, “happiness is not a fish you can catch”. so, what are you supposed to answer when someone asks you if you are happy? i guess lacan would say happiness is the object a. you want it so badly but you can never have it. it’s impossible.
