alias season 1 dvd box

Monday, September 29th, 2003

finally! the first season of alias is available on dvd in the UK. i only managed to watch some of the special features yet. the gag reel is hilarious and the pilot diary well worth watching. it offers some incredible insights: “victor garber doesn’t drive. well, he can drive but you don’t want to be in the same city when it’s happening” (speaking of the scenes when jack bristow has to drive a car.) apart from that, life still sucks (as usual).

equilibrium

Thursday, September 25th, 2003

in the search for suitable sci fi film for my project i came across “equilibrium”. wow, that is definitely the best sci fi movie of this year. (still waiting for matrix revolutions, but my expectations are rather low after the disappointing matrix reloaded.) it’s a mixture of minority report and matrix with a story and visual representation of its own. it’s highly poetic in the depiction of violence as one of my friends pointed out. a hot candidate for my PhD thesis.

nothing’s for granted

Tuesday, September 23rd, 2003

life’s full of surprises. one thing i’ve learned so far (and over and over again) is that you can’t take things for granted. i believe that one little moment can change your life - for better or for worse.

case mod

Saturday, September 20th, 2003

i am still recovering from my cold but feel way better today. i made some snapshots of my chieftech case after putting in two blue cold cathodes. i took the pictures with my old webcam, so please excuse the poor quality.

not well

Tuesday, September 16th, 2003

darn, i’ve come down with a cold or something. my windpipe burns like hell. guess i can scrub the (work) plan of this week. gonna hit the sack soon. i feel like the proverbial dog.

new week, same work

Monday, September 15th, 2003

so here i am now, supposed to find a new way of structuring my case study. finally, the book on how to structure and interpret internet case studies arrived today as well as the Alias 2004 wall calendar. the book was dispatched in germany last monday, the calendar in the US last wednesday. funny, isn’t it? back to my work or project or whatever it is… i really have to get down to some serious research. i am supposed to kick ass. i have to. i guess i am on the right track and need just a little bit more focusing. as always, the hardest thing is to bring “the balloon of the mind” to paper (or rather, file).

fun with mySQL

Wednesday, September 10th, 2003

the forum of my clan needed to be moved to a new server. that means: fun with mySQL! spent the entire afternoon migrating the database. it was a nice change in my daily routine, doing something different than researching my paper. mySQL is fun. kidding.

twenty four

Monday, September 8th, 2003

that’s great, television just got more innovative, again! 24 (”twenty four”) is definitely a new form that rewrites the definition of crime drama and suspense. after all, there are at least some reasons to watch tv. to be precise there are three reasons: 24, Alias, and ER.

solaris

Saturday, September 6th, 2003

slowly i am trying to get back into my project by watching recent sci-fi movies. i guess i found an excellent candidate for my analysis in solaris. (the 2002 remake starring george clooney.) it is a fascinating film, no doubt about that. it’s philosophical and moving. some people say it’s boring, well, that depends what you’re expecting. it is mistakenly labeled as “thriller” - solaris is by no means a thriller. but i won’t spoil anything. as i said, an excellent movie for my thesis.
